TheEnvironmental Assessment Program (EAP)within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill aEnvironmental Laboratory Auditor-Inorganic Chemist (Chemist 3) position. This position is locatedin our Central Region Office (CRO) inUnion Gap, WA.

In this position, you will contribute to the program and agency missions by accrediting environmental laboratories in order to assure that they are capable of providing accurate and defensible analytical data to the state departments of Ecology and Health. As the Inorganic Chemistry Auditor, you will provide technical guidance, advice and assistance to WA accredited laboratories and those seeking to become accredited in the area of General Chemistry and Trace Metals. You will travel to Environmental Laboratories across the State to conduct onsite audits, both as part of an audit team and solo. You will also conduct virtual assessments of laboratories. You will help laboratories navigate applicable State and Federal Regulations and ensure understanding and compliance with Laboratory Accreditation Requirements. You will interact with accreditation unit customers including laboratories, State and Federal Agencies, and data users within the WA departments of Ecology and Health.

Tele-work options for this position: This position is eligible for up to an 80% telework schedule. What makes this role unique?
In this role, you will serve as an Inorganic Chemist on a two-person team based at our Central Regional Office, to primarily focus on Accreditation of Wastewater Laboratories located in the Central and Eastern Regions of WA State. There is a significant need for technical assistance in inorganic chemistry which you will provide to wastewater laboratories located in these regions.
What you will do:
Process initial applications and renewal for laboratory accreditation.
Assess performance testing results for Inorganic Chemistry parameters.
Review laboratory supporting documentation for Inorganic Chemistry parameters.
Conduct in-person and virtual audit assessments for Inorganic Chemistry parameters.
Respond to customer questions about Inorganic Chemistry testing.
Provide technical support for accredited laboratories performing Inorganic Chemistry testing.
Required Qualifications: Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
Option 1: A Bachelor's degree with a major study in chemistry OR A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college-level chemistry
Four years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
Option 2: A Master's degree with a major study in chemistry OR A Master’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college-level chemistry
Two years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
Option 3: A Ph.D. with a major study in chemistry OR A Ph.D. with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college-level chemistry
One year of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
Option 4: Two years of experience as a Chemist 2, at the Department of Ecology.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: Must possess and maintain a valid driver license.

Experience with Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures of environmental laboratories, with particular emphasis on Inorganic Chemistry.
Familiarity and hands-on bench experience with a variety of Inorganic Chemistry testing methods including EPA Methods and Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.
Hands on bench experience in General Chemistry within the past 10 years.
