Summary (About the Position):
This announcement is for a full-time civilian faculty position at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) as provided under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment may be up to three years, with the first two-years as a trial period. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Academic rank and salary will be based on the selectee’s academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments; however, the focus and salary are at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. Full Professor appointments may be available by exception.

The faculty positions in this announcement are in the Department of Command, Leadership, and Management (DCLM), School of Strategic Landpower, USAWC. DCLM provides core instruction in Strategic Leadership and Defense Management. DCLM offers electives in these broad topic areas and conducts research to advance the same. Fundamentally, DCLM educates transitioning senior leaders in the art and science of strategic leadership.
The Army War College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and is in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, home to a historic Army post that provides a collegial work environment with plenty of opportunities for professional growth and development. Carlisle Barracks is in south-central Pennsylvania, 30 minutes from the state capital of Harrisburg and two hours from Washington D.C. The Carlisle community has a temperate climate, excellent schools, and low cost of living.

Duties:
Teach and facilitate seminar dialogue in the USAWC core course in Strategic Leadership (SL). The SL course reviews individual and organizational factors that have shown to generate and maintain competitive advantage in large organizations.
Teach and facilitate seminar dialogue the USAWC core course in Defense Management. The Defense Management course introduces Department of Defense systems and processes required to generate and prepare military force for the nation.
Participate in and contribute to faculty development programs that prepare all DCLM faculty to facilitate instruction in the Strategic Leadership and/or Defense Management courses.
Design and teach elective courses related to the science or application of leadership and management, particularly at the strategic level.
Contribute to specialized instruction in either strategic leadership or defense management concentration programs. These specialized programs provide more tailored educational experiences for USAWC students.
Engage in research and publishable scholarship that advances knowledge in fields relevant to the Army War College curriculum and/or to leadership development in the U.S. Department of Defense.
Provide developmentally-focused counsel to mid-career professionals to take most advantage of the academic year.
Engage in external service in support of the U.S. Army or the U.S. Department of Defense, including consulting, leader development, and applied research.
Operate as a contributing member of a faculty teaching team to integrate required and elective courses across the academic program.
Contribute to a professional, collegial, and inclusive departmental (DCLM) climate that prioritizes student development.
Contribute to the Department of Command, Leadership, and Management and the Army War College missions by fulfilling other faculty duties as required.

Qualifications: Define SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs); Limited to 24,000 characters including spaces – bullet style format
Relevant theoretical and practical experience in the science and practice of effective leadership at the strategic level, as well as experience in development of others for such duties.
An established record of superlative teaching at the graduate, and/or executive or Senior Service College level. This should include preparedness for teaching successful, mature, professional students.
Record of scholarly research and publication—or evidence of potential for such research and publication—in areas relevant to the curriculum, to include management, organizational systems and processes, Industrial / Organizational psychology, sociology, decision science, or U.S. Department of Defense force development systems and processes.
The ability to prepare, teach, and lecture on subjects related to strategic leadership and/or defense resource management.
The ability to conceptualize, design, and write lesson plans that support the Department of Command, Leadership, and Managements for executive students at the U.S. Army War College.
Refined oral and written communication skills to both present and provide feedback to others, including the ability to serve as a student advisor for graduate-level research projects.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on a teaching team or with professional colleagues oriented on similar goals.
Possess an advanced degree in a relevant field. A Ph.D. or equivalent research or practical degree (DBA) is strongly preferred. Related fields include management; organizational theory, systems and processes; management strategy; Industrial / Organizational psychology; sociology; military ethics; or decision science, including data science, data analytics, or use of artificial intelligence processes. Extensive experience in and with governmental or business systems and processes can substitute for or significantly enhance this qualification.
