The Information Technology Services (ITS) organization, a campus-wide provider of technology services for academic, research, and service missions is seeking a Network Engineer to join our Network Services team. This team is responsible for the design, implementation, performance, and ongoing maintenance of the University of Iowa enterprise network, a critical institutional service.
This is a Professional & Scientific full-time position is classified as a Network Engineer (PIN2) the second level of this job family. The person in this position will contribute to network architecture, project communication technology needs, and the implementation and ongoing management of campus-wide communication technologies to ensure the highest possible service quality and integrity. Ideal candidates at this level enjoy aspects to mentor and contribute to the success of the team.
This position will require occasional off-hours work and will participate in a team after-hours on-call rotation. Our department values work-home life balance. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with the expectation of greater than 60% being on campus. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES (not all-inclusive):
Design:
Design, implement, and maintain the campus networks to meet institutional requirements and standards.
Research and recommend products and solutions based on project requirements.
Utilize advanced knowledge of current and emerging network management applications and networking technologies as it applies to network designs
Analysis/ Implementation:
Investigate and evaluate new network management applications, hardware and software solutions
Utilize network integrity analysis tools and interpret resulting information of moderate complexity.
Leadership:
Function as a technical resource on and may lead network services projects.
Assist in the development of models and procedures for installation and support of networking services.
Participate in IT Security related activities such as monitoring, design, investigation
EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience (typically 1-4 years) working as a network engineer, systems administrator, or security analyst, involving the support and implementation of an enterprise-class network.
Working experience with networking concepts, protocols, and services including managing the day-to-day delivery of stable and reliable network services to clients.
Basic Knowledge in the design of complex enterprise and/or campus networks
A strong understanding of the hardware infrastructure, DNS (domain name system), routers, firewall systems, and cloud computing applications.
Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills, must be systematic, technically curious, and self-motivated. Ability to diagnose and resolve a variety of basic to complex network problems.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Responsible for network equipment replacement, code upgrade. Ability to accomplish day to day tasks including ascend/descend a ladder, lift, transport up to 50 pounds.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with IPv6 addressing (highly desirable)
Knowledge of wireless network equipment
Knowledge of software programming and shell scripting necessary for the development and integration of monitoring and management tools
Knowledge of DNS and DHCP
Experience evaluating new and emerging technologies
Experience supporting technology in a higher educational setting.
Knowledge of 802.11 wireless security standards such as WPA2-enterprise and RADIUS
Experience with network monitoring tools, enterprise monitoring of network infrastructure, network performance and capacity analysis.
Knowledge and hands-on experience supporting and troubleshooting a wide variety of wired and/or wireless devices
Understanding of monitoring and reporting protocols including SNMP, SYSLOG, MIBS, etc.
