The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is accepting applications for the position of Common Operational Research Environment (CORE) Lab Faculty Associate – Research in the Department of Defense Analysis (DA). NPS provides graduate education to military officers of the uniformed services, Department of Defense civilians, and members of the international defense community. The DA department provides two graduate curricula, one for the study of special operations and irregular warfare, the other focusing on joint information operations. The mission of DA is simple: to arm select US and international military professionals and interagency personnel with the critical thinking skills and specialized knowledge that they will need for waging and prevailing in the complex conflicts under way — and those to come.
The CORE Lab is an emerging technologies and methods analytics lab and is broadly sponsored by several supporting agencies. Our mission is to help U.S. and International field operatives develop the skills necessary to fuse and analyze geospatial, cultural, relational, and temporal data in order to gain comprehensive understanding of the operational environment. We are looking for a Faculty Associate to join our CORE Lab team in picturesque Monterey, California to work under the direction of a faculty member and officer students supporting various projects. The projects are in the areas of Irregular Warfare broadly (e.g., unconventional warfare, counter-terrorism, influence operations, etc.), Strategic Competition, organizational and topic mapping, maritime operations, law enforcement, disaster response, and Security Force Assistance. The position is based on a one-year contract with one-year extensions contingent upon funding.
The primary purpose of this position is supporting and contributing to CORE Lab training and research. These efforts includes providing academic advice to NPS students with regards to their research and theses, and coordinating and participating in the educational outreach of CORE Lab methodologies to local, domestic and international partners. The approximate percentage of time spent on each of these tasks is as follows:
- 50% Provide Social Network Analysis educational outreach & training
- 30% Provide analysis using social network, geospatial, social media data methodologies
- 10% Provide student research support with CORE Lab methodologies
- 10% Provide support on application development
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree preferred, preferably in social network analysis, data mining, data visualization, terrorism or related fields.
- Should be able to travel up to 3 weeks at a time.
- Preparation of written reports that draw conclusions and make recommendations based on the analysis.
- Experience with teaching or training in a graduate environment.
- Advanced knowledge of R and open-source packages
- Ability to create new tools in R and utilize packages such as igraph, statnet, visNetwork, dplyr, shiny, ggplot, maptools, ggmap, and leaflet for R, to name a few.
- Preferred knowledge of one (1) or more of the following programming languages: JAVA, HTML, C++, STATA, PYTHON, PHP.
- Preferred experience in developing and maintaining database such as SQL, ACCESS, MONGODB.
- Experience and/or interest in working with military, government or law enforcement.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Should currently hold or be eligible for a Secret clearance.
