Under general direction, the Director of Emergency Management performs administrative and technical work relative to the development, implementation, coordination and on-going updates of the University's Emergency Operations Plan. Coordinates and acts as an emergency management liaison for the University's Policy Making Group as well as area fire departments and Oakland County Emergency Management. Develops and provides disaster training, exercises, and public awareness programs. Works with and consults for various large-scale event coordinators on campus to ensure that a comprehensive emergency plan is in place for large scale, high profile, and/or sporting events on campus with overall goals of 1) Protect life, health, and safety; 2) Secure and protect facilities, property, and equipment from loss; 3) Maintain essential services and operations; 4) Provide for restoration of services, functions, and facilities.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in homeland security, emergency management, criminal justice or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Five years of experience in an emergency response environment (law enforcement, fire suppression, emergency medical, military), or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Michigan certification as a Professional Emergency Manager (PEM) or the ability to secure certification upon employment.
Must be able to maintain an established work schedule that may include evenings or weekends and time on-call while away from work.
Must successfully pass a background check.
A valid driver's license and driving record acceptable to the University by the University's insurance carrier.
Must be able to interact with university leaders during emergencies and act with confidence, patience, and integrity during stressful situations.
Must have effective time management skills and be able to work independently with little supervision. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with others.
MCOLES certified or certifiable upon employment is desired, but not required.
