THE GOVERNMENT PERFORMANCE PORTFOLIO WITHIN PROGRAM Pew's government performance work identifies and advances effective approaches to help solve complex challenges at all levels of government in the United States.
The portfolio's work can be traced back to our founders' early efforts to improve the lives of Americans by supporting efforts that promoted health, civic engagement, and democratic ideals. Today, we conduct research on emerging topics, develop data-driven reports, and highlight innovative, non-partisan approaches in addressing complex problems at the federal, state, and local levels as well as the interplay that can occur between jurisdictions. Current initiatives focus on health, fiscal and economic policy, and safety and justice, and take into account significant trends such as evolving technologies, and the increasing racial and ethnic diversity in the United States population.
Our teams explore and advance effective, evidence-based policies using credible, timely, and accessible research, assessing public support for change, identifying approaches that have proved successful elsewhere, and bringing together diverse perspectives to find common ground. ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE PROJECT Pew's antibiotic resistance project supports policies and research that would spur the creation of new antibiotics, establish stewardship programs to ensure that antibiotics are prescribed only when necessary in human health care settings, and reduce the need for antibiotics in food animals.
POSITION OVERVIEW The associate will inform and influence public policy by providing research and programmatic support to achieve the goals of the project. This will include developing subject matter expertise in the drivers of inappropriate antibiotic use, stewardship, and relevant policy interventions; participating in the execution of the project's research and outreach plans; and assisting with convening meetings and stakeholder communications.
The associate will work closely with the senior officer and officer, human stewardship, and other Pew colleagues in communications, research, government relations, and other areas.
The position, based in Pew's Washington, D.C., office, reports to the senior manager, antibiotic resistance project. The position has a set time frame that could be extended based on the success of the program, funding sources, and board decisions on continued support.
* Under the direction of the senior manager and guidance of other human stewardship staff, the associate will: * Develop and maintain a broad knowledge of antibiotic resistance and policy issues related to improving antibiotic use in human healthcare settings. * Contribute to research efforts including conducting primary research, literature reviews, and policy analysis. * Help identify and summarize research and federal and state policy developments related to antibiotic resistance and stewardship in human healthcare settings. * Contribute to the development of publications that are accessible to the public, media, and policymakers, including fact sheets, issue briefs, web features, and other materials. * Confirm the accuracy of products and publications by leading and participating in quality-control and fact-check review processes. * Contribute to the development of presentations and talking points to support internal and external communications. * Collaborate with communications and government relations colleagues as needed for outreach to the media, policymakers, and other stakeholders. * Help organize stakeholder convenings. * Contribute to and participate in tasks of the project and department as assigned, as well as broader Pew-wide projects and committees as needed.
* Associate's degree or equivalent experience is required. * At least one year of applicable experience, including demonstrated research, analytical, writing, and fact-checking skills. Experience in public policy preferred. * Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew. * Ability to write clearly and cogently for internal audiences, policymakers, the media and the public. * Ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue, as well as to identify, understand, and synthesize different policy perspectives. * Strong systems skills including Microsoft Office products required; database and online research applications preferred. * Ability to work professionally and collegially within a creative, fast-paced corporate culture that emphasizes excellence and teamwork. * Demonstrated time and project-management skills, including an ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high-level of organization.
