The Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC) is seeking a Programmer Analyst to join its Data Coordinating Center located at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. METRC is a collaborative research network conducting multi-institutional clinical trials and studies in the field of trauma in conjunction with investigators at the Department of Defense and more than 50 civilian and military trauma centers around the country.
The Programmer Analyst is responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance, performance, production support and documentation of various systems and services used by METRC. This includes but is not limited to the installation, modification, and testing of new and/or upgraded applications (externally developed or home grown) and productivity tools.
The duties of the Programmer Analyst include the following:
Perform periodic REDCap system upgrades by merging custom code and thoroughly testing all changes;
Refactor legacy code to align with newer versions of REDCap;
Gather and operationalize technical and functional requirements provided by and in consultation with leadership, study teams, and technical staff;
Take program specifications, description of data, and preferred methods into account to analyze problems and determine solution steps;
Develop, maintain, new or existing programs in accordance with programming standards and validation procedures;
Maintain, support and configure virtual Linux Servers as needed;
Ensure data security, both within server environments and software interfaces.
Create and maintain technical and non-technical documentation, including data dictionaries and changes to data management systems;
Use programming knowledge and critical thinking to resolve technical or procedural problems and customize applications, both individually and in conjunction with other programmers;
Research new technologies as needed, perform proof of concept testing, and make recommendations to team;
Create new websites as needed using content management systems;
Monitor developments of REDCap community to learn about the latest features and bugs and share with the project team;
Assist in the detection of problems in research instruments, data collection, and data entry and make suggestions or provide solutions through written or verbal reports;
Provide redundant support for user management, data dictionary development and administrative data changes;
Assist coworkers with general IT support
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and 1 year of related programming experience;
Operational experience with web-based data management systems;
Prior experience with relational database management systems (RDBMS), including MySQL;
Basic command line proficiency with Linux operating systems;
Strong programming and technical documentation skills;
Understanding of data security issues;
Basic server management knowledge;
Proficiency with content management systems and web-based collaboration tools;
Good interpersonal and writing skills and the ability to present ideas to colleagues in both technical and non-technical roles;
Critical thinking and analytical reasoning abilities;
Keen attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities are a must.
Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Significant experience using REDCap strongly preferred;
Experience working in a research coordinating center environment;
Prior experience using APIs, electronic data collection and server-based reporting tools;
Prior experience using Git to manage code changes and software upgrades;
