We are currently seeking experienced candidates for the position of General Accounting Team Lead. Under the general supervision of the General Accounting Manager, the General Accounting Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of General Accounting functions within the Accounting Department, including planning, assigning and reviewing the work of professional and technical staff. The Team Lead also performs advanced professional accounting work involving substantial judgment, discretion and the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and sound accounting practices to the resolution of a wide variety of complex accounting problems.
ESSENTIALDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Serves as a high-level contributor providing expertise and assisting the General Accounting Manager with cash, general ledgers, subsidiary ledgers including accounts receivables and GAAP processes.
Provides work direction and monitors the day-to-day activities of the general accounting area and assigned professional and/or technical staff to ensure work is adequately covered and deadlines are met. Assists in the selection of accounting staff and provides feedback to manager on performance evaluations of assigned staff. Provides training, guidance, and assistance to other Accounting and Finance staff.
Responsible for general ledgers, taxation and GAAP processes. Processes tax reports which necessitate a strong knowledge of federal, state and local tax requirements i.e. 1099-MISC reporting to IRS, Non-Resident Alien reporting to Internal Revenue Service/Franchise Tax Board, Use and Sales Tax reporting to Board of Equalization, and UBIT (Unrelated Business Income Tax) processing and reporting, etc.
Responsible for the analysis of accounts in LEGAL, FIRMS (Financial Information Record Management System) and GAAP Ledgers [i.e. identify abnormal balances for corrective action; program code variance analysis and GAAP analytics, etc.].
Prepares a variety of journal entries and journal uploads [i.e. GAAP Adjustment Entries, Expenditure Transfers including correcting entries, and Cash Posting Orders (CPOs), etc.], Prepared by Client (PBCs) schedules, supporting analyses and schedules for LEGAL, consolidated and GAAP financial reports. Process claims to the State Controller's Office (SCO).
Maintains accurate and complete accounting records for CSUMB and interprets financial reports and statements. Audits records and processes, identifies problem areas, and recommends corrective and preventive action for assigned areas. Communicates and/or composes correspondence regarding accounting matters. Provides feedback when planning and coordinating financial audits and other fiscal control procedures.
Assures that assigned accounting reporting systems and procedures are in compliance with established administrative policies and procedures and acceptable accounting standards. Updates procedures as necessary, in collaboration with the AP Team Lead, General Accounting Team Lead and the General Accounting Manager. Provides consultative services to campus staff and administrators in implementing recommended changes in accounting systems or procedures and in resolving accounting problems. Participates in the review, design, and implementation of accounting systems and upgrades. Works closely with systems analysts to improve campus financial systems.
Actively participates and contributes materials presented at Business Operations Forums. Attends accounting related workshops to stay updated on current policy and procedures. Relates this new information back to management, staff and the campus personnel as it applies. Assists with the annual manual year-end reporting to SCO and the Chancellor's Office. Participation can include, but not limited to, planning for the event, creation of training materials, presenting a power point presentation, public speaking and/or instructional presentations.
University Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable/Travel and GAAP by providing and receiving guidance or assistance including cross-training and backfill needed of vacations, vacancies, and short-term absences or departmental needs.
Provides good customer service by building rapport with CSUMB employees and providing courteous and friendly customer service.
Performs other job-related duties and special projects as requested by management.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Extensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); office methods and procedures; statistical and mathematical presentation of data; advanced proficiency with current word processing and spreadsheet software programs, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems and/or other types of records management systems. General knowledge of governmental accounting and internal control methods and related laws, rules, and regulations. Working knowledge of federal student financial aid annual reporting requirements, and quarterly grant reporting requirements.
Ability to: apply accounting principles to the analysis of complex accounting problems; analyze and interpret accounting data; prepare complex financial statements and reports; utilize problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex accounting problems; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and principles; make decisions and recommendations regarding accounting activities; communicate effectively with others inside and outside the unit, including conveying technical information to non-Accountants.
Minimum Qualifications: Equivalent to a bachelors degree with a major in accounting, business administration, finance or a closely related field OR a combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities; ANDequivalent to five years of progressively responsible professional accounting experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Experienced with: implementing and maintaining internal controls; writing office and desk procedures; creating process flow charts. Experience must include professional accounting in all or most of the following areas: General Accounting (LEGAL, FIRMS & GAAP), Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Collections, Taxes, Asset Management, and Cash Handling (receipts, disbursement, assigning transactions codes). Skilled in: performing complex reconciliations; preparing complex financial statements and reports; investigating and resolving errors and discrepancies; preparing documents for processing into the general ledgers, and computing and posting figures rapidly and accurately.
Advanced proficiency in using financial systems, not only working with the general ledgers, but accounts payable, and asset management modules, including querying data, using PeopleSoft/Common Financial System and Data Warehouse or equivalent, accurately and efficiently. Proficient in creating spreadsheets in EXCEL. Ability to quickly and independently research learn and implement State Administrative Manual (ICSUAM) requirements. Proactive approach and forward thinking. Technical fluency with Microsoft Office Professional Suite, G Suite (Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Calendar, and intranet drives; and internet browsers. Highly desirable: Masters degree in business-related field and/or CPA license. Recent experience in the audit of full disclosure, audited financial statements. Strong attention to detail and excellent customer service skills. Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to CSUMBs Vision.
