The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) is comprised of eight academic departments, including the School of Education and the Cal Poly Pier Research Facility. The College Technical Services Team supports approximately 200 tenured and tenure track faculty, 175 temporary faculty lecturers and teaching associates, and 60 staff and administrators. Under the general supervision and direction of the Associate Dean, this position works independently in support of CSM equipment, research, and technical needs, providing services as needed to faculty and departments throughout CSM. This position works in collaboration with all College technical and instructional support staff ensuring excellent service college wide. In addition to providing equipment support services to the college, this position works collaboratively with faculty, subject matter experts, and support staff to effectively design and fabricate specialized equipment to enhance faculty research projects, pedagogy and improve student learning.
The primary function of the Specialized Equipment Technician is to provide advanced technical system support for the College's extensive, state of the art laboratories, including installation, removal, maintenance, repair, modification, and/or fabrication of general and specialized scientific equipment, instrumentation and systems that are used both in instructional and research laboratories. The Specialized Equipment Technician must also analyze logistical and safety issues, formulate action plans, and execute decisions that support the College's immediate and long-term goals, is an emergency contact for the College, provides training to end users, and is responsible for maintaining the College's extensive equipment inventory.
This Equipment Technician will be part of the CSM Design and Fabrication Facility team who collectively are responsible for the design, fabrication, construction, and installation of the highly specialized scientific equipment necessary to support the unique research and instructional programs within the College of Science and Mathematics. The Equipment Technician will be a vital member of educational and research teams and collaborates and supports innovations in both. This ability requires the incumbent to possess a significant breadth of knowledge regarding scientific equipment design and operation as well as extensive experience with a wide variety of fabrication techniques and materials.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Education and Experience:
Equivalent to three years of progressively responsible journey-level or skilled experience in the maintenance, repair and operation of scientific or technical equipment in the specialty area to which assigned, including one year involving design modifications and fabrication of complex and highly technical equipment.
Equivalent to two years of semi-skilled experience maintaining and repairing scientific or technical equipment or related equipment experience as part of instructional support activities may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Equivalent to two years of trade school or technical arts training with specialization in the type of equipment repair to which assigned. completion of an apprenticeship program, or completion of a full military specialization in the required type of equipment maintenance and repair may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Licenses, Certificates, Credentials:
Possession of a valid driver's license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Comprehensive knowledge regarding scientific equipment design and operation, as well as extensive experience with a wide variety of repair and fabrication techniques and materials.
Ability to learn about a particular field of research, fabrication using new or novel materials, or fabrication using new techniques during the course of design and fabrication of various types of scientific equipment.
Demonstrated ability to maintain analytical instrumentation, including the use of methods/daily procedures that optimize instrument cleanliness, as well the use of periodic cleaning procedures.
Expert skill in preparing network diagrams or system schematics with an understanding of component functionality.
Demonstrated experience with cable and wiring standards to configure systems to meet requirements. Proficiency to create system layout and develop operating procedures.
Expertise to physically install and configure equipment, connections, wiring and cable, as required, working from layout or plans. Demonstrated ability to read, comprehend, and apply information from service manuals, online resources, schematics, blueprints, and manufacturer's tech support.
Working knowledge of the use and operation of specialized, including computer-controlled, scientific instrumentation.
Knowledge of programming concepts and ability to use operating system features and network protocols, as applicable to scientific equipment and instrumentation.
Expertise in the use, analysis and diagnosis of equipment out-put.
Ability to quickly learn specialized or analytical software packages for equipment.
Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot and resolve instrumentation hardware and software problems. Ability to analyze and formulate strategic plans for the equipment repair process.
Ability to apply excellent problem-solving to facilitate excellent laboratory operations.
Ability to be responsible for all aspects of projects from conception, design, to manufacture and completion of final product. This includes custom and unique items such as: intricate and/or obsolete replacement parts, specialty instruments, apparatus, cabinetry, specialized field trapping equipment, surveillance and monitoring systems, and aquatic tank and support systems.
Ability to design unique and highly technical experimental instruments with accuracy and precision from oral or written concepts with the ability to specify the appropriate, cost-effective materials.
Ability to listen to requirements and desires of faculty, staff and students and respectfully provide creative advice, guidance and solutions to meet project goals. Communicate directly with faculty regarding instrument prototyping. Manage relationships with a large number faculty and graduate students and tailor suggestions to best fit the needs of each research program.
Ability to organize, coordinate and assist in fiscally managing a shop. Maintain inventories of diverse items in multiple locations and that are utilized by numerous people.
Demonstrated ability to perform quality control tests and calibrate to insure functionality, accuracy and precision.
Ability to research and gather information from multiple sources to aid diagnoses and repair.
Thorough knowledge of fabrication procedures to maneuver, manipulate, form, cut, shape, punch, bend, weld, solder, join, and abrade.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Advanced knowledge of Unix, Windows, and OSX.
Proficiency in software packages including, but not limited to, MS Word, Excel, databases, calendaring, email, AutoCAD, and SolidWorks.

Ability to lift, carry and move heavy, awkward, or unwieldy equipment with and without moving aids.
Ability to lift/move and carry up to 80 pounds.
Ability to have hand dexterity to maneuver, place and utilize miniature parts and tools.
Ability to climb ladders and stairs and crawl under and behind furniture and equipment and into enclosed spaces.
Ability to respond to emergencies and crises on and off normal work hours.
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.

Retired CalPERS members selected for this vacancy must request and be approved for reinstatement from retirement prior to the start date.
