Department Summary The University of Oregon Police Department (UOPD) plays an integral role in the university community by providing a safe and secure campus environment conducive to learning, living, socializing and working. Position Summary The purpose of this position is to provide programmatic management to the department’s various law enforcement and security initiatives. This involves overseeing a variety of ongoing security programs, coordinating community outreach efforts, and emergency response and investigation of non-person crimes. This position is highly analytical, requiring the ability to interpret complex, multi-layered policies and procedures and the ability to explain those policies and procedures to a wide range of individuals. Position is responsible for determining the best path forward in designing and implementing security programs and operational tactics ensuring compliance at all stages. This position, at times, can face resistance and must consistently use a diplomatic approach when facing adversity.
This position will have regular daily contact with all members of the University of Oregon campus community in addition to members of the general public. They will serve as the face of the program representing the UOPD, specifically the security unit.
This position makes decisions daily that relate to the safety and security of the campus community. These decisions could affect the Community Service Officer’s own personal safety, the personal safety of the university community and the security of buildings and property on campus. This position requires self-initiation based on guidance and training.
Work is reviewed regularly by the Security Manager to ensure performance is efficient, safe and meets both expectations and applicable requirements.
Essential Personnel This position is one of those required positions necessitating that the employee make every reasonable effort to arrive at campus at their regularly scheduled times during inclement weather and/or university closures unless otherwise notified by their supervisor or manager.
Work Schedule Work schedule will vary depending on department needs.
Minimum Requirements • Two years of technical or professional-level experience advising and/or instructing the public concerning specific programs or processes, monitoring programs, or performing participant reviews.
Professional Competencies • Ability to take quick, appropriate action in stressful circumstances, maintain composure in emergency situations, and handle confidential information with discretion. • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to maintain legible handwriting, type accurately and efficiently, and prepare a standardized report; candidates fluent in a second language are highly regarded. • Ability to routinely conduct self in a mature, professional and respectful demeanor with equal regard to all contacts. • Ability to use established policy and innovation in solving customer service and programmatic issues. • Ability to follow directions and administrative policies, procedures, and guidelines. • Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented and time-sensitive environment. • Demonstrated integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned duties. • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. • Ability to adhere to the Clery Act, FERPA, mandatory reporting and Title IX reporting responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications • College course work or degree from an accredited college or university. • One year experience in a security capacity, or similar military security experience. • Basic knowledge of contemporary security and property protection techniques and methodologies. • Language competency in Spanish, Arabic or Chinese. • Knowledge of the University of Oregon campus and community.
