The Magellan International School (Colegio Internacional Magallanes), in Austin, Texas, is seeking a Head of Primary School. This position will be an educational leader to work with the Head of School as leader of the Primary section and to continue to strengthen the PYP curriculum in the context of a multicultural school. We are looking for a dynamic, inspirational educator, with fluency in English and Spanish, who has experience with the IBPYP. MIS is an authorized IB World school and Austin is one of America´s great cities with a thriving intellectual community gathered around the University of Texas, and a high technology corridor both of which are adjacent to the lovely hill country of Central Texas. Responsible for the overall educational leadership management of the Primary School (Year K-5)
Strive to ensure the provision of quality education for students and continued improvement in student achievement
Manage schedules, procedures, and protocols to best achieve educational outcome
Plan collaboratively with the PYP Coordinator to oversee management of resources effectively and equitably
Assist in the preparation and management of the budget for instructional resources in the Primary Section
Resolve parent and student issues/concerns related to student support services
Implement multi-tiered systems of supports for learning and behavior
Demonstrate a professional knowledge of the principles and practices of leading learning in a school and supporting and modeling professional learning
Develop strategies with the PYP Coordinator and Director of Human Resources to enhance the performance and welfare of the Primary staff
Promote a welcoming environment for members of the wider community into the school – such as parents and visitors
Work collaboratively as a member of the LT (Leadership Team) to facilitate coordination amongst the preschool, primary, middle school, and administrative sections
Create an atmosphere in The Magellan International School that encourages learning
Conduct regular larger-scale meetings with parents such as information evenings and open houses
Coordinate and implement appropriate orientation and information sessions for the students, parents, staff and members of the wider community
Liaise with parents and MISPA (MIS Parent Association) to ensure sound relationships are developed, and facilitates appropriate contact between staff and parents
Meet with Primary School parents who have specific interests or concerns
Liaises with other international schools in order to enhance both the school’s development and its profile
Meets regularly with the Head of School and Pedagogical leadership team to ensure a whole-school focus
Brief the Head of School on all matters of significance pertaining to the Primary School
Oversee that student evaluation and assessment meet the needs of students
Ensure the physical environment is safe and meets the needs of students
Deal with disciplinary cases that might arise in the Primary School in accordance with the Student Discipline Plan
Ensure that students recognize diversity and promote respect between individuals
Directly oversee the work of the Primary School Staff
Implement the school’s agreed approach to appraisal for all Primary Teachers, and Teacher Assistants
Provide information to the Head of School as requested when renewal for Primary Teachers, Teacher Assistants, and office staff is being considered
Assist the Head of School and Director of Human Resources in recruiting of local and overseas teaching staff
Ensure that Primary School Teachers receive appropriate support and resources in the performance of their duties
Provide curriculum and instructional leadership for the school
Ensure that staff has the necessary resources to provide the best learning experiences
Hold regular meetings with teachers and PYP Coordinator to deal with matters of interest and significance relating to the work of the Primary School
Work with the Leadership Team in the construction of the whole-school calendar
Ensure on an ongoing basis that dates for all activities specifically involving the Primary School are entered into the calendar
Assist with construction of the school timetable
Assist in the development of a master plan for development of the Primary School in line with the school’s strategic initiatives
Coordinate or assist in coordinating the school’s accreditation program
Ensure the MIS pedagogy meets national and international standards

This job operates in a professional office as well as a fast pace classroom environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
“Core” work hours: 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Availability during occasional nights and weekend events.
Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Have previous experience in a leadership position within a Primary/Elementary School or Division
Have previous successful experience with International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program
Be familiar with PYP authorization, CIS or similar accreditation processes
Demonstrate strong team leadership and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to enhance the collaboration and partnership between staff, students, parents and the wider community to ensure support and alignment of all stakeholders towards shared school goals
Be community-oriented and motivated to involve the full range of the school community - staff, students and parents in the management and development of the Primary School at The Magellan International School
Be sensitive towards, and familiar with, a diverse range of student learning needs
Be sensitive towards cross-cultural issues and understanding
Demonstrate success modeling and inspire a love of learning
Have experience in hiring, leading, and managing school faculty
The position supervises the Primary School and reports directly to the Head of School.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Education or closely related field
5- 10 years of experience as Primary Head or school section leader, preferably in an international school
3-5 years of experience in managing students with mild to moderate special needs
Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary
Proven ability to effectively manage human, financial, and physical resources to deliver a high quality organizational outcome
Experience with IB PYP
Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to develop and sustain productive relationships with and beyond the school community
Preferred Education and Experience
Master's degree in Education, or equivalent, with a demonstrated interest in remaining at the forefront of educational trends
Certification in special education
Demonstrated strategic thinking and analytical skills and the ability to use those to influence the educational agenda of the school
