About the Program: The successful candidate teaches in the Education program at the Special Commitment Center by developing curriculum, teaching and assessing student learning of Adult Basic Education and pre-vocational classes.
This position reports to the Education Coordinator/Instructor of Pierce College at the Special Commitment Center and must interact with students, faculty and staff of the college, Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and SCC clinical and residential staff. Work is assigned according to the Interagency Agreement between Pierce College and DSHS/SCC under supervision of the Education Coordinator. Work requires knowledge of FERPA regulations to respond to student inquiries, as well as extremely stringent policies and procedure of the DSHS/SCC.
About the Position: The successful candidate will:
Teach courses that are grounded in sound developmental theory and teaching methodology Develop curriculum for residents at Special Commitment Center
Engage residents in facilitating learning leading to achievement of learning outcomes
Analyze complex problems and judge best solution or action to resolve or respond to difficult situations independently
Communicate with and assist upset, confused, demanding, or otherwise difficult residents effectively
Listen attentively, identify issues, provide options, fulfill services, and/or exercise knowledge of laws and regulations to assist others and/or resolve complaints or conflicts
Explain and enforce laws, regulations, and consequences of non-compliance. Report cases of non- compliance, sharing necessary information with appropriate authorities.
Draw upon a strong base of disciplinary knowledge, skills, theories, issues, research, and applications to design engaging and effective learning experiences
Demonstrate multicultural competence, including awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations, and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity and diversity
View assessment as formative in teaching and learning, using analytics and evidence to reflect on and improve learning
Engage in ongoing professional development as a process of continuous improvement Perform other academic duties as assigned
Lecture rate is $42.75 per hour. This position is benefits eligible.
Expected Outcomes: Pierce College embraces an outcomes-based faculty job description, which is included below. Faculty are expected to: 1) engage in teaching and learning; 2) advise and mentor students; and 3) participate in shared governance of the department, division, college, and district. Faculty are evaluated consistent with the Permanent Status evaluation process outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Teaching and Learning Outcomes: Faculty design quality educational experiences in order for each student to apply abilities, as well as disciplinary and interdisciplinary skills and concepts toward the achievement of their education/career goals. This outcome will be achieve by:
Organizing, instructing, and assessing teaching and learning in order to maximize student achievement of learning outcomes and competencies through Psycho –Educational Modules, Toastmasters, Secure Community Transition Facilities, and A-Certificate
Bringing new experiences to students by staying current within one's field

Designing classroom experiences in a manner that engages learners
Completing and submitting required SCC and DSHS reports as assigned by the Education Coordinator
Advising/Mentoring Outcome: Faculty provide quality advising/mentoring in order for the student to acquire the information necessary to plan an efficient career path to her/his learning goal. This outcome will be achieved by:
Providing quality advising/mentoring for assigned advisees considering national advising/mentoring best practices
Participating in a discussion with each student that advises them toward success and guides the student toward courses congruent with their Education Plan
Shared Governance Outcome: The successful applicant will actively and collegially participate in the shared governance of Pierce College by:

Conditions of Employment:
This position is scheduled to work 19 hours per week,Fri-Sat 9.5 hours per day.

Physical Work Environment: Work is performed in an office and instructional setting. The Special Commitment Center is a maximum security mental health facility that houses and treats residents (sexually violent predators) who have demonstrated behavioral issues relating to safety, security and rule compliance. This position is located at McNeil Island Corrections Center, there exists the potential for violence. The incumbent must be able to board/depart a ferry via a ramp and be able to travel from the McNeil Island dock to the Corrections Center, a distance approximately one quarter of a mile. In addition, MICC rules require timely passage of employees from one location to another.

Master of Education;
