EDUCAUSE (http://www.educause.edu), a highly creative, entrepreneurial, national nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education through the use of information technology, invites applications for the position of Senior Researcher to support the Analytics and Research Department. This is a full-time, exempt position with the option to work remotely or from the Louisville, CO office; pay rate commensurate with experience.
The Senior Researcher serves as a principal investigator in service of EDUCAUSE research initiatives. These initiatives include, but are not limited to the EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research (ECAR), the EDUCAUSE Workforce study (CDS), the EDUCAUSE Student and Faculty technology use studies, and other original research projects.
The Senior Researcher supports EDUCAUSE research initiatives that provide members with the information they need to better plan, manage, and deliver IT services, as well as to understand and communicate the value of IT and its contributions to higher education. The Senior Researcher contributes to this mission of EDUCAUSE by designing and conducting research inquiries using a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods, analyzing research results in the context of member needs, and communicating findings and advice through published reports, digital media, and conference presentations. Throughout the research process the Senior Researcher actively develops and sustains productive relationships with appropriate communities of IT practice and research. The Senior Researcher is also responsible for leading the development of new, innovative research products.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads and directs all aspects of research projects, including design, data collection, analysis, reporting, visuals and publication (with input and assistance as warranted from technical experts) by independently establishing research scope and priorities for highly complex information technology research projects; identifying and directing the contributions of subject matter experts and consultants; developing and managing all project plans, resources and budgets; creating the contents, structure, and format of research reports and associated research products.
Leads the development of new, innovative research products to extend the usefulness and strategic value of EDUCAUSE research. Directs needs and opportunity assessments for new products, leads design committees of key community thought leaders, and conducts the research and development necessary to prototype, evaluate, and engineer new potential research products based on member input.
Applies research to specific products and use cases, assessing the value and contributions of information technology to higher education and specific institutions, or making the case for IT investments, decisions (such as moving to the cloud), or involvement in institutional strategy (“a seat at the table”).
Coordinates members of the research project team, including EDUCAUSE staff from multiple units, contractors, consultants and member volunteers associated with the research projects’ activities, including data collection, analysis, report writing, and publication. Works successfully in a collaborative, collegial environment in which every team member assumes responsibility for engaging intellectually in every project, and helps enforce high standards of quality and service.
In addition to general expertise in higher education IT, serves as a primary expert in one or more IT content areas, with responsibility to understand, analyze, synthesize, and articulate information technology practice and trends in higher education and in society at large, and to identify emerging issues of special interest to the EDUCAUSE membership. Establishes excellent credibility as an analyst within the higher education IT community through an appropriate combination of administrative and IT experience in higher education, relevant research or consulting experience, and advanced academic training.
At the discretion of senior staff, participates in, initiates and leads EDUCAUSE research outreach activities (leads webinars, participates in member updates, attends and presents at national conferences attended by higher education leaders, etc.)
Contributes to the ongoing maturation and development of EDUCAUSE research standards and products.
Identifies, recruits, and convenes EDUCAUSE members to serve as expert advisors for research initiatives.
Evaluates member-submitted research.
Advises on the research agenda.
At the discretion of senior staff, consults with the EDUCAUSE community and its partners about specific research needs.
Education and Experience
Requires graduate degree in survey methodology, operations research, psychology, psychometrics, economics, education, sociology, computer or data science, business administration, or related field(s) of study. Strong combination of education and experience will be considered.
A minimum of ten years’ experience in executing qualitative and quantitative research appropriate to EDUCAUSE’s applied research needs.
Recognized as a respected member of the research or higher education community, demonstrated by a strong publication and speaking record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Expert-level qualitative and quantitative research skills. Extensive experience with complex data sets including manipulating, merging, restructuring and analyzing large data sets.
Expertise in higher education, applied research, and/or one or more of the following IT domains: Administration and Management of IT, IT Support Services, Educational Technology Services, Research Computing Services, Data Centers, Communication Infrastructure Services, Enterprise Infrastructure and Services, Information Security, Identity Management, and Information Systems and Applications.
Superior writing, editing and presentation skills.
Excellent project management skills in individual and group work situations, including demonstrated ability to manage multiple short-range and long-term projects simultaneously and meet all deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully, in both oral and written form, with a variety of groups including technical, professional, and executive audiences.
Ability to sustain collaborative relationships, forge partnerships, and build consensus with colleagues and within a diverse community of practice.
Ability to implement an effective process for synchronous and asynchronous collaborative work; use initiative to identify better ways to work, solve problems, and suggest improvements.
Ability to handle both broad and detail-oriented work, achieving tangible results.
Agility in work style and ability to change priorities, adjusting to current conditions.
Preferred: Experience working with a distributed workforce.
Preferred: Comfort with and enthusiasm for diverse mechanisms for finding, creating, sharing, and disseminating digital content online.
Preferred: Administrative and/or faculty experience in higher education
Preferred: Data science acumen, including skills in advanced statistics, programming, and data storytelling.
EDUCAUSE is a fast-paced organization with an ambitious agenda and a staff that is committed to the mission. This position may experience high work demands under tight timelines. The position requires working on a computer for extended periods of time and attending scheduled meetings. Travel may be required to support EDUCAUSE conferences/events, research team operations, and external events relevant to the position. The position may be fulfilled by an individual working remotely if home office technical capabilities and connectivity requirements can be met to ensure effective telework.
